Jack Lau obtained his BS and MS degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley under the Honors Degree Program (Option H). He completed his Ph.D. degree in 1994 and became the first Ph.D. to graduate from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. From 1995-96, he was a Visiting Scholar at the Center for Integrated Systems at Stanford University . While at Berkeley, he was a recipient of the UC Berkeley Alumni Scholarship, Unisys Scholarship and Cray Research Scholarship.

From 1994 to 1998, he was an Assistant Professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in the Department of Electronic an Computer Engineering. In 1995, he received a Teaching Appreciation Award from the School of Engineering. He received his tenure in 1998 at the Department. Currently, Jack is an Adjunct Professor of the University.

In 1999, he started Perception Digital, a factory-less consumer electronics design house which specializes in design supply chain management and digital signal processing. The company went public in 2010 in Hong Kong.

He also completed his EMBA degree at Kellogg-HKUST in 2010.
